FERGUS COYLE (Bristol, UK)
Editorial, Portrait and Lifestyle Photographer based in Bristol U.K.
I have long been interested in China since my brother moved to Wuhan; the sprawling capital of Hubei province around 6 years ago. Having finally made the trip late last year and with help from my now sister in law, Chen Chen, I went about photographing some of the people and landscapes that make up some of contemporary China today.
Practice Statement: How does photographing on film (or using your material photographic process of predilection) inform your artistic practice?
The majority of my commercial and editorial work is produced digitally and I’m fine with that! When it comes to creating a project however, I prefer to use film. For me it is an antidote to the constant on the fly editing as it forces you to slow down and think about your subject. I also love the depth it brings to an image which somehow cannot be recreated digitally. With my latest project in particular, I found that I had very little work to do in the scanning process as the majority of tones and colours working with very little manipulation.
