GABRIEL GENG (Chicago IL, USA)

Biography:

My name is Gabriel Geng, I’m an MFA in photography 2018 candidate at Columbia College Chicago. I received my BS in Financial Application Economics from Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas.

Artist Statement:

I always ask myself about the choices I made along the way. Why did I came to the States? What did I sacrifice to switch my career from a financial professional to a photographer? What does my future look like? These issues are buried deeply in my mind with question marks all over the place.

But I am not alone. I know there is a unique group of people sharing the similar concern as me. My subject matter reflects the struggle of them, the Chinese students born between 1990 and 1995 who study in the US. Due to political issues, they are forced to make the decision between staying here or going home in a short time after graduation. As they stand at the crossroad of life, they cannot help but ask the same questions, yet within a much shorter time period. After all, the fundamental issue here is to pursue the meaning of life. With my work, I attempt to help you understand this minority community and recall the moments in which you have had to make decisions about your own life.

Practice Statement: How does photographing on film (or using your material photographic process of predilection) inform your artistic practice?

I work with a Hasselblad 501C and Kodak Portra 400 film to shoot my portraits. Medium format film leads to photos with more information and details.
