JOHANN HUSSER | DORTMUND, GERMANY
I was born in Siberia, Russia (1990), studied initially Spatial Planning and since 2013 BA Photography in Dortmund, Germany. I am a scholarship holder of the “Studienstiftung des deutschen Volkes”.
What is your work about?
The submitted photographs are taken from the series Our Only True Life Is In The Future. “Our only true life is in the future” dictates O´Brien in 1984 by Orwell. My project attempts to create a hypothetical future vision, which is inspired by books such as “1984”, “Stalker” etc. . Drawing material not only from my own photographic stock, but also from the archives of the NASA, the project questions scientific progress and transports the viewer into a dystopian place. (The submitted selection focuses on the material of my own photographic stock.)
How does photographing on film (or using your material photographic process of predilection) inform your artistic practice?
The process is probably the main reason for me to work with film material. Taking the time to compose an image, waiting for it to be developed and the scanning process itself, all this is something i don´t want to miss when making images. And film photography satisfies my aesthetic expectations in a way digital photography hasn´t done yet.
