BRUNO CESCHEL: “HOW TO SELF-PUBLISH A PHOTOBOOK”
JULY 24-28, 2023, BOWEN ISLAND, BC

The How To Self Publish a Photobook Workshop is a great opportunity for people interested in publishing their own photography book to discover insider secrets. Workshop participants will be given all the necessary tools and insight that they will need to start self-publishing right away. The course covers a variety of contemporary publishing models, from the zine to the traditional perfect-bound photography book. There will be theoretical and practical advice to help you with the editing, sequencing and design of publications.

The course will bring insights from Ceschel’s long experience of how best to distribute and market work. During the five-day workshop each participant will present his or her own idea to the class and then bring their project to life using publishing software. The workshop ends with the production of a dummy book. The workshop mixes group classes and one-to-one tutorials. This is a workshop for everyone who has an existing photographic series that they would like to make into a book.

This workshop has been hosted by organisations including Aperture Foundation, Photo LA (United States), La Fábrica (Spain), Offprint (France), MiCamera (Italy), Hydra (Mexico), Goliga (Japan) and in universities including the Maryland Institute College of Art (United States) and University of the Arts London (Britain).

Schedule: Meets in-person at FotoFilmic on Bowen Island on Monday July 24, Tuesday July 25, Wednesday July 26, Thursday July 27 and Friday July 28 from 9am to 5pm (hours subject to change).

This program is limited to 12 participants.

ABOUT BOWEN ISLAND

Nestled in spectacular Howe Sound, North America’s southernmost fjord surrounded by towering peaks that rise straight out of the sea, Bowen Island (Nexwlélexwm is its native Squamish name) has been Vancouver’s paradisiac getaway since the 1900s. This enchanted island is known for its exceptional serenity, centennial parks, artistic culture, and laid-back country living a short 20-minute ferry ride from West Vancouver.

FotoFilmic has called Bowen Island home since 2015, and currently hosts all its in-person mentoring programs there at the FotoFilmic space conveniently located in Artisan Square. The large 1600+ sq ft venue is set up to accommodate a wide range of hands-on artistic activities and lab type experimentations, while also acting as a photography gallery. The island’s lush natural settings yearlong, its small and relaxed coastal town feel and few amenities all combine to offer an immersive, inspiring and nurturing retreat experience unlike any other.

FotoFilmic acknowledges, with gratitude, that the land on which it operates is the unceded and ancestral territories of the Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish) Nation.
