FotoFilmic Curatorial Practicum

F.C.P 23: FOTOFILMIC CURATORIAL PRACTICUM LED BY REBECCA MORSE, CURATOR OF PHOTOGRAPHY (LACMA) & ARTIST MARK MCKNIGHT

F.C.P 23: FOTOFILMIC CURATORIAL PRACTICUM LED BY REBECCA MORSE, CURATOR OF PHOTOGRAPHY, WALLIS ANNENBERG PHOTOGRAPHY DEPARTMENT (LACMA) & ARTIST MARK MCKNIGHT
JULY 31 – AUGUST 4, 2023, BOWEN ISLAND, BC

The purpose and objective of this 5-day practicum is to provide emerging and mid-career photographic artists a thorough and practical understanding of exhibition concept and design.

Having curated a wide range of photography exhibitions at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art since 2013 (and previously at The Museum of Contemporary Art for 15 years), Rebecca Morse will present, through select case studies, the process of working with contemporary artists and historic work to create compelling and innovative museum exhibitions. Discussions will include conceptualizing exhibitions, practical issues including floorplans and lighting, as well as creating accompanying didactic materials and educational programs.

Drawing on his own experience with installation and exhibition design at a variety of prestigious international venues, artist Mark McKnight will walk participants through a variety of strategies for presenting their work: addressing scale, installation, sequencing, and framing, as well as the ways in which artists might help viewers draw meaningful relationships to their work through the use of titles, press releases, and artist statements, all of which will be workshopped over the course of this practicum.

Rebecca and Mark’s perspectives will provide a stimulating framework for participants to experiment in situ: by clarifying concept, process, and form, this practicum will help participants navigate the difficult transition from portfolio to exhibition wall, and materializing impactful formats for the gallery presentation of their work.

The practicum’s final articulations will also be documented and gathered under the form of a featured limited-edition newsprint publication edited in collaboration with FotoFilmic. Each participant will be mailed a few hard copies as a keepsake.

Schedule: Meets in-person at FotoFilmic on Bowen Island on Monday July 31, Tuesday August 1, Wednesday August 2, Thursday August 3 and Friday August 4 from 9am to 5pm (hours subject to change).

This program is limited to 12 participants.

ABOUT BOWEN ISLAND

Nestled in spectacular Howe Sound, North America’s southernmost fjord surrounded by towering peaks that rise straight out of the sea, Bowen Island (Nexwlélexwm is its native Squamish name) has been Vancouver’s paradisiac getaway since the 1900s. This enchanted island is known for its exceptional serenity, centennial parks, artistic culture, and laid-back country living a short 20-minute ferry ride from West Vancouver.

FotoFilmic has called Bowen Island home since 2015, and currently hosts all its in-person mentoring programs there at the FotoFilmic space conveniently located in Artisan Square. The large 1600+ sq ft venue is set up to accommodate a wide range of hands-on artistic activities and lab type experimentations, while also acting as a photography gallery. The island’s lush natural settings yearlong, its small and relaxed coastal town feel and few amenities all combine to offer an immersive, inspiring and nurturing retreat experience unlike any other.

FotoFilmic acknowledges, with gratitude, that the land on which it operates is the unceded and ancestral territories of the Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish) Nation.
