F.E.P 23: FOTOFILMIC EDITORIAL PRACTICUM LED BY EMMA BOWKETT & CIAN OBA-SMITH

1 SCHOLARSHIP AVAILABLE: APPLY BY MARCH 31st!

F.E.P 23: FOTOFILMIC EDITORIAL PRACTICUM LED BY EMMA BOWKETT, DIRECTOR OF PHOTOGRAPHY (FT WEEKEND MAGAZINE) & PHOTOGRAPHER CIAN OBA-SMITH, JUNE 26-30, 2023, BOWEN ISLAND, BC

Over the course of 5 consecutive days filled with lectures, field assignments and critiques, participants will gain first-hand experience working editorially and understanding the various roles, dynamics, and expectations at play between photo editors and commissioned photographers.

As Director of Photography for FT Weekend Magazine since 2009, Emma Bowkett will employ her extensive experience working with photographers all around the world to coach participating photographers throughout the production of a local assignment aimed at documenting the life and work of the small Bowen Island community where FotoFilmic is based. Along with photographer Cian Oba-Smith, a rising British documentary photography voice whose work on fringe communities and subcultures already earned him many distinguished awards and accolades, they will illustrate together the constructive dialogue and collaborative building blocks typically involved with creating editorial work for print and online publications.

Structured after the fast pace and turnaround of a weekly publication, the workshop will start online with one group and individual meeting with the mentors to align each participant’s artistic and research interests with a fitting assignment profile and subject. FotoFilmic will then reach back to the island community to coordinate the best possible matches and firm up all assignment settings.

Between these two exceptional mentors as well as additional contributions and feedback from two remote guest lecturers, participants will be guided through assignment preparation, approaching their subject, trust building and the ethics of representation, tailored work strategies, day-to-day photo editing, text writing, and more.

The assignments will culminate in a featured limited-edition newsprint publication edited in collaboration with FotoFilmic. Each participant will be mailed a few hard copies as a keepsake, and a celebratory milestone of the great forward leap made in their practice.

Schedule: Meets first online over 2 introductory sessions: 1:1 individual meeting (20 minutes per participant) the 1st week of June + 1h30 group session the 2nd week of June + meets in-person on Bowen Island at FotoFilmic on Monday June 26, Tuesday June 27, Wednesday June 28, Thursday June 29 and Friday June 30, from 9am to 5pm (hours subject to change)

ABOUT BOWEN ISLAND

Nestled in spectacular Howe Sound, North America’s southernmost fjord surrounded by towering peaks that rise straight out of the sea, Bowen Island (Nexwlélexwm is its native Squamish name) has been Vancouver’s paradisiac getaway since the 1900s. This enchanted island is known for its exceptional serenity, centennial parks, artistic culture, and laid-back country living a short 20-minute ferry ride from West Vancouver.

FotoFilmic has called Bowen Island home since 2015, and currently hosts all its in-person mentoring programs there at the FotoFilmic space conveniently located in Artisan Square. The large 1600+ sq ft venue is set up to accommodate a wide range of hands-on artistic activities and lab type experimentations, while also acting as a photography gallery. The island’s lush natural settings yearlong, its small and relaxed coastal town feel and few amenities all combine to offer an immersive, inspiring and nurturing retreat experience unlike any other.

FotoFilmic acknowledges, with gratitude, that the land on which it operates is the unceded and ancestral territories of the Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish) Nation.
