DANIEL SHEA: “DOWN, UP & AROUND; PAGES, SCREENS & WALLS”
AUGUST 14-18, 2023, BOWEN ISLAND, BC

Through a series of presentations, readings, discussions and working studio sessions, this workshop will engage with processes, strategies and philosophies of editing photographic works for books and exhibitions.

Conventionally, photographers edit a sequence of images, organize the sequence into a book, and make a further selection to be printed and framed on the wall. This workshop asks these conventions to be turned over and more precisely considered. What prompts can you establish to understand the physical shapes your photographs may take? What does it mean to be more rigorously playful and expansive with these shapes?

Workshop participants will be expected to come with a developed project or collection of images/works. We will begin by looking and responding to the work and seeking to understand how it might best be dynamically presented; in book form? On the wall? Installed? Digitally-projected? On Instagram?

From there, participants will be encouraged to consider how exhibitions and books are distinct contexts that produce different, but often intersecting versions of one’s work. We will then experiment with moving back and forth between different collected sequences, most prominently in book and exhibition form.

Schedule: Meets in-person on Bowen Island at FotoFilmic on Monday August 14, Tuesday August 15, Wednesday August 16, Thursday August 17 & Friday August 18 from 9am to 5pm and online over 2 follow-up sessions: Monday, August 28 (1:1 individual meetings, 30 minutes per participant) + Sunday September 17 (4-hour group session)

This program is limited to 10 participants.

ABOUT BOWEN ISLAND

Nestled in spectacular Howe Sound, North America’s southernmost fjord surrounded by towering peaks that rise straight out of the sea, Bowen Island (Nexwlélexwm is its native Squamish name) has been Vancouver’s paradisiac getaway since the 1900s. This enchanted island is known for its exceptional serenity, centennial parks, artistic culture, and laid-back country living a short 20-minute ferry ride from West Vancouver.

FotoFilmic has called Bowen Island home since 2015, and currently hosts all its in-person mentoring programs there at the FotoFilmic space conveniently located in Artisan Square. The large 1600+ sq ft venue is set up to accommodate a wide range of hands-on artistic activities and lab type experimentations, while also acting as a photography gallery. The island’s lush natural settings yearlong, its small and relaxed coastal town feel and few amenities all combine to offer an immersive, inspiring and nurturing retreat experience unlike any other.

FotoFilmic acknowledges, with gratitude, that the land on which it operates is the unceded and ancestral territories of the Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish) Nation.
