JRNL OPEN CALL

JRNL PUBLICATION

JRNL is FotoFilmic’s new quarterly newsprint publication. Each edition is associated with a monthlong JRNL Open Call juried by an influential editor/curator of photography, and publishes 12 photographers (1 spread each) around a common theme. The Guest Editor also awards the JRNL cover to 1 of the 12 selected photographers (cover + spread) and writes a few paragraphs of feedback commenting on all the works presented. At launch JRNL copies will be available online, as well as distributed internationally at select partnering venues in Canada, USA, Australia, Europe and Asia.

All 12 published photographers receive 1 complimentary JRNL copy each.

JRNL GUEST EDITOR

Lucy Conticello, Director of Photography at M, Le Monde magazine (Paris, France), is the Guest Editor of the Summer 2019 JRNL edition!

Photography editor, critic and lecturer Lucy Conticello has worked  for Business Week, The New York Times, l’Espresso, The New York  Times magazine, Courrier International, The International Herald Tribune as well as photography  agencies such as Sipa Press, Magnum Photos and –briefly, the AFP.

In 2011 Lucy joined M, the newly redesigned weekend magazine of Le Monde as the Director of Photography coordinating a staff of photo editors in charge of all the editorial assignments (portraits and features) for the magazine. Lucy has been assigning photographers for several years now; what she loves most is the creative  process of pairing photographers with stories, brainstorming ideas and  seeing how these pictures end up defining these articles.

She regularly takes part in international photography juries, most recently The LensCulture Portrait Award and the Prix Virginia, as well as portfolio reviews and workshops. Lucy also sits on the Advisory Committee for Unseen Amsterdam.

THEME

The theme for this first JRNL edition is ‘Sub-Lands: Material Lyricism’. The call invites works exploring the postmodern landscape and adhering to contemporary photography’s shifting ground when describing environments, be they natural, social, or fictional. The JRNL theme ties into many of contemporary photography’s preoccupations inviting fresh perspectives on the mundane, the dystopic, the overlooked, the transitory, the in-between, and the sublime as it relates to the photographic landscape.

ELIGIBLE WORK

JRNL is all analog: all images submitted must have been captured either on film (any format or type) or using other analog imaging processes (paper, glass, alternative processes, etc.). No digital captures are accepted. Works shot on film, then scanned and postedited are all eligible to be entered.

JRNL strives to present photography that is current and reflective of today’s critical focuses and societal narratives: work entered must have been thus created after January 2010.
