SUMMER/FALL 2026 OPEN CALL

After over a year hiatus, FotoFilmic is thrilled to relaunch its feature “JRNL” guest edited publication in a whole new exciting magazine format in Paris, France, this fall!

2019-25
JRNL has been in existence for over 6 years since early 2019, and published to date 276 emerging and mid-career photographers from all around the world through 23 quarterly issues guest edited by some of the most reputed names in the industry and presented in a large high quality full color newsprint format.

2026 –
This summer JRNL is finally back for a new issue as an exciting biannual A4-sized magazine publication to present 10 different photographers across 10 full spreads each, picked by a panel of 5

WORK ELIGIBILITY 
The new JRNL Magazine now welcomes all lens-based contemporary practices from film and alternative/historical processesto digital photography and the infinite hybridized methods of making work that exist between the two realms today!

JRNL Magazine however doesn’t change in that it remains first-and-foremost an authorial publication, seeking to publish original works and stories attuned to the whole fabric of our fast-changing societies. As such, its publishing brackets are opened wide to all topics and subjects from the personal and the nitty-gritty of everyday life, to more integral studies unfolding visions of critical importance.

JRNL LAUNCH PARTIES
In addition to making print copies available to everyone online as before, FotoFilmic will also bring each new issue closer to the photography community in the form of magazine launch party events open to the public and happening in various capital cities around the world aligned with FotoFilmic programming. This first Summer/Fall 2026 JRNL Magazine Issue’s launch party will take place in Paris, France, on Friday, November 13, 2026, during Paris Photo week! GUEST EDITORS

KATHY HUNDERTMARK 

Katy Hundertmark is an Amsterdam-based artist, editor and curator with a special interest in practices that reframe and expand the photographic canon. Previously she worked as Programme Assistant at Stills Centre for Photography (Edinburgh) as well as co-editor of the photography publication Notes – Letters to Photography. She currently works as managing editor of Foam Magazine as well as curator at Foam Museum and writes a Substack newsletter on all things photography and publishing, called Dear Midnight. Through an international approach she aims to create cross-cultural connections and mutual understanding between makers, audiences and institutions worldwide. She has lectured at art schools like for example ECAL (Lausanne), KABK (The Hague) and LABA (Valencia).

ALEX KAHL

Alex Kahl is the Online Editor of WePresent, the arts platform of WeTransfer. He runs WePresent Selects—their monthly series of eight stories about artists from around the world—leading the curation and working closely with each artist featured to find the best way to tell their story and represent their work, both digitally and through events and activations. The WePresent Selects spotlight a wide variety of artists, from more established names to those at earlier stages in their careers, with many of them using the space to premiere new projects. The series has so far featured photographers such as Mous Lamrabat, Carolyn Drake and Simon Wheatley, and in total WePresent has featured work from over 1000 artists from more than 120 countries across the globe. Alex has been working at WePresent since 2018 and in that time the platform has won numerous awards, including an Academy Award, Cannes Lions, Webbys, D&AD awards and a BIFA.

ANDREW KATZ

Andrew is the Deputy Photo Director at The New Yorker. An ambitious visual leader, he manages several photo editors; commissions photojournalism, studio portraiture, and documentary photography; and pitches and produces Portfolios. He joined the team in 2021 after four years as TIME’s Deputy Director of Photography, where he co-managed the team and produced covers and photo essays. Andrew has commissioned hundreds of stories by more than 200 photographers on (or above) all seven continents. The photographers’ resulting work has been awarded by the Pulitzer Prizes, American Society of Magazine Editors (National Magazine Awards), Dart Awards for Excellence in Coverage of Trauma, Overseas Press Club, Society of Publication Designers, World Press Photo, and more.

JASON KOXVOLD

Jason Koxvold (b. 1977, Liege, Belgium) received his BSc in Social Science from the University of Edinburgh, Scotland in 2000. His fine art practice focuses on the shared spaces between neoliberal economic policy and military power; he has made work in diverse locations, from Afghanistan to Nigeria, Arctic Russia to South Africa. His first monograph, Knives, was published in 2017, followed by You Were Right All Along (2018), Calle Tredici Martiri (2019) and Engage and Destroy (2023). He is also the founder of Gnomic Book, an imprint focused on challenging subjects by emerging artists, and has published over 25 books in this capacity. Koxvold has exhibited in solo and group shows in the United States, Britain, France, and Japan. His work has been featured in publications including The British Journal of Photography, Aperture, the Financial Times Magazine, Der Greif, Wired, Le Litteraire, Newsweek, Gestalten, Thisispaper, The Great Leap Sideways, Mother Jones, and Slate.He currently lives and works in Portland, OR.

AARON STERN

Aaron Stern is a New York based curator, artist and author working between the Americas and Europe. His photographs, books, writing and curatorial projects have appeared in publications and institutions such as the  International Center for Photography, RoseGallery, Webber Gallery, Magenta Plains, Dashwood Books, Perrotin, Photo Saint Germain, Paris Photo, The New Yorker, W Magazine, Aperture, Purple Magazine, The Paris Review, Vogue, The New York Times, Dazed&Confused, and Interview Magazine.

JRNL CALL DETAILS

SUBMISSIONS/PUBLICATION

SUBMISSIONS

  • JRNL submissions are now open to all types of work (film/analog and digital)

  • Submissions must include up to 25 images coming from a single series/project or cohesive body of work. All validated submissions will be forwarded to the 5 JRNL guest editors at the end of the call for their careful review and to make their final selections.

PUBLICATION

  • A4/8.3 x 10.7 inches magazine format
    Each selected photographer for this new JRNL Magazine issue will receive 10-spread (20 pages) worth of publishing space to present their work in-depth to world audiences. Published photographers will be required to provide FotoFilmic with high resolution images of all the works they submitted by August 23rd, along with a short biography and an artist statement (each not to exceed 300 words).

  • The 10 published photographers will each receive one (1) complimentary JRNL Summer/Fall 2026 Issue print copy in the mail free of any cost. They can also opt to pick up their free copy in person during the November 13 Paris Magazine launch.

  • Submission fee: $35 USD

  • Please fill out the form to the right to send us your JRNL Summer/Fall 2026 issue submission. Submissions are subject to a $35 USD entry fee payment in order to be validated.  Please also note that all works submitted must have been created within the past 10 years (Jan. 2016 and after).

SCHEDULE

  • Submissions deadline: Sunday, July 5, 2026 (11:59 pm PDT)

  • Jurying: July 6 – August 2, 2026

  • Winners announcement: Tuesday, August 4, 2026

  • Deadline to receive high-res files from selected photographers: Sunday, August 23, 2026

  • JRNL launch party date: Friday, November 13, 2026, 6-8pm, Paris, France (exact venue tba later in the summer)
