OPEN CALL: JRNL 8 SPRING 2021 ISSUE
KICKOFF 2021 BY GETTING YOUR PROJECTS PUBLISHED BY APERTURE MAGAZINE’S EDITOR MICHAEL FAMIGHETTI!
Submissions welcome all types of analog & film photography entries and can include up to 10 photographs (from 1 or 2 different series). All submissions will be personally reviewed by Michael (no shortlisting) who will pick and curate together 12 photographers to elevate their visibility in the eyes of the global photography community this spring.
Each photographer selected for JRNL 8 will receive 2 full colour portfolio spreads presenting their selected works, also accompanied by written feedback from Michael – a powerful and lasting endorsement certain to command the photography industry’s attention. In addition to beautiful portfolio spreads, one lucky photographer will also be awarded both JRNL 8 Covers for even greater exposure and recognition. And, as always, all published photographers will be mailed a complimentary JRNL 8 print copy free of cost.
GUEST EDITOR MICHAEL FAMIGHETTI
Michael Famighetti is editor of Aperture magazine. In 2013, he organized a relaunch and reconceptualization of the magazine, which won a 2018 National Magazine Award for General Excellence. He is the recipient, with guest editor Sarah Lewis, of the ICP Infinity Award for Critical Writing and Research for “Vision & Justice,” the summer 2016 issue of Aperture. In addition to editing the magazine, Famighetti commissions and edits books for Aperture Foundation, including volumes by William Christenberry, Robert Adams, John Divola, Jonas Bendiksen, Kwame Brathwaite, Joel Meyerowitz, among others. He is currently a visiting critic at Yale University School of Art and a participant in SVA’s Mentors program. His writing has appeared in Frieze, Bookforum, Aperture, among other publications. He is a member of the American Society of Magazine Editors and has been a guest reviewer and speaker at many international festivals and institutions, including the Museum of Modern Art, New York; The New York Times; Vogue Italia; FOAM, Amsterdam; Art Gallery of Ontario; the Bamako Biennial, Mali; Kyotographie, Kyoto; Museet for Fotokunst, Odense, Denmark; and Fotografiska, Stockholm.
JRNL is all analog: all images submitted must have been captured either on film (any format or type) or using other analog imaging processes (paper, glass, alternative processes, etc.). No digital captures are accepted. Works shot on film, then scanned and postedited are all eligible to be entered. JRNL strives to present photography that is relevant to today’s photographic culture: all works submitted must have been created after January 2010.
